Connie Chung

Connie Chung is known as the first Asian and the second woman to anchor one of America’s major network news programs. Connie Chung was born in Washington D.C on August 20th, 1946. Connie Chung went to the University of Maryland and received a degree in Journalism. She started working her way up the journalism ladder when she started her journalism career at Washington’s WTTG-TV. After two years of working at Washington’s WTTG-TV, CBS hired Chung to work as a Washington-based correspondent. At CBS, Chung had her first big interview: an exclusive sit-down with President Richard Nixon during the Watergate Scandal. In 1983, Chung transferred to NBC.  With a three- year deal with CBS, she started a program called Face-To-Face with Connie Chung. At this time Connie Chung was one of the most popular journalists in T.V news.  After a couple months Chung canceled the program, as she wanted to work on having a baby with her husband.  In 1993, CBS hired Chung to be co-anchor of the nightly news broadcast with Dan Rather.  Besides Barbara Walters, Chung was only the second woman to hold one of the main network anchor chairs. In 1995, Chung got into trouble when she interviewed Kathleen Gingrich and forced her to admit that her son called Hilary Clinton “ a bitch.”  Chung's interview style was said to be very direct and it landed her in trouble many times. Eventually, concerns over her interviewing style led her to be removed from the co-anchor chair.  Chung rejected the offer for the lower position, and moved to ABC news in December 1997.  She anchored the Friday Night News magazine 20/20 for a couple years, and then soon after in 2002, she moved to CNN. She started to anchor a new show that was at competition with Fox News. Unfortunately, the show was a disaster which caused Connie to take a break from television for a little while. In 2006 she returned to T.V with her husband with a show called Weekends With Maury and Connie. However, it was canceled after 6 months. Chung later in life accepted a teaching fellowship at the Kennedy School Of Government at Harvard University.
