I attended the journalism career fair which I thought was a very good way to get acquainted with the local journalistic opportunities available. However, the day's experience turned out to be a big disappointment.
Initially walking into the ballroom, I saw a sea of business attire which immediately made me intimidated. With my business clothes being at home, I felt really under dressed and uncomfortable to try and attempt to make connections. Not to mention I had my book bag in hand, due to the fact that I had class right after.
With three resumes in hand I was ready to talk to two organizations from the get-go, which were the NBC table as well as the WUSA 9 table. With those being two major news businesses in the area I figured that they would be the perfect place for me to get broadcasting internship experience, but due to the extensive lines and time constraints I wasn't able to actually talk to the organizations. Just before my departure though, I spoke with a peer and they reassured me that the organizations weren't looking for freshman because we are simply just not what they are looking for. That subsequently made me feel a tad bit better.
I think my biggest upset of the day had to be missing the Multi-Platform/Broadcast Journalism Panel. I knew that there was insight that I could have definitely benefited from by attending this panel, but as usual class got in the way.
The career fair was wonderful despite my bad experience. In the coming years however, I now know what to expect and I'm hoping that in turn makes for a better experience for me.
